High above Innsbruck on a slate rocks stands the impressive Renaissance Ambras Castle. The idyllic Castle Garden with its old stock of trees is a popular destination for locals. In the Castle itself, visitors are enchanted by the evidence of a great past: The magnificent Ambras art collections, started by Archduke Ferdinand II, include his art and wonder room, his armouries and his antiquarium. The Hapsburg portrait gallery contains over 200 paintings, including highly valuable works of famous artists such as Lukas Cranach, Titian, van Dyck and Diego Velásquez. The ground floor of the main castle houses the collection of late mediaeval sculptures, whose showpiece is the George Altar of Emperor Maximilian I.
