His discovery caused a sensation and his photo went around the world: The man from the ice, found in 1991 on the Hauslabjoch, and from then on lovingly called Ötzi. The venerable age of the glacial mummy, which originates from the fourth millennium before Christ, made Ötzi a stroke of good luck for research and local archaeology. The Ötz Valley has since then become productive territory for archaeological findings. The earliest settlement of prehistoric man in this region has been shown to date from 8,000 B.C. How our Stone Age ancestors lived can be learnt in an enjoyable and tangible way at Ötzidorf on a site of 11,000 m² near Umhausen in the Ötz Valley. It’s unique in Austria!
Play meadow for Stone Age kids
Not only historians and romantics enthuse about Ötzidorf. There is plenty to see here: the Late Neolithic huts, bread baking oven, sacrificial place, dugout canoe, rock carvings, hunter’s tent, stone chamber grave, stone menhirs, Ötzi’s hut with grain store, two-wheel barrow on a log road, and many more. There is also a play meadow for Stone Age kids. Even “Stone Age” animals tumble around in the open-air park: wild horses, Mangalitz pigs, blackneck goats, forest sheep and aurochs. They enjoy life in Ötzidorf and regularly give birth to offspring. As Stone Age people had a good understanding of celebrations, festivals based on the ancient rituals regularly take place in Ötzidorf. The village is also a great place to hold children’s birthday parties.
