Amongst bears, wolves and over a hundred of different alpine species: often even well experienced animal lovers first encounter the impressive diversity of the alpine fauna during their visit in the Alpenzoo Innsbruck. Among zoo experts and the public the Alpenzoo is well known and acknowledged for its success in breeding rare species. From the alpine chough to the harvest mouse - most of the typical and unique alpine species can be seen here and have successfully reproduced. Particular favourites of our visitors are the brown bears and the otters; the wolves and olden eagles demand respect, Turopolje pigs, old alpine breeds of sheep, goats, geese and cows can be observed at the farm house. Since the mountains are the natural habitat of our animals, the Alpenzoo is located at the foot of the Nordkette on a slope with some rather steep sections of track. So remember to wear comfortable shoes!
Crafty as a hawk in the zoo school
The education department exists at the Alpenzoo Innsbruck since 1984. The zoo educators know the animals and their daily and seasonal rhythms well. Their demonstrations are therefore particularly interesting and lively. Besides supervising school classes, they are also involved with adult education, building up a collection of teaching resources, personal training, running the zoo's own library and organising regular exhibitions.
