Who dares go inside the Earth to a ghostly realm? Everyone does, because Sturmann’s Cave at Obermaiselstein, the only accessible show cave in the Allgäu, is not as ghostly as all that. The path is well illuminated so as to avoid any unpleasant surprises. Instead, there are even more pleasant surprises: 120 million year old rock formations and mythical stories accompany the visitor on the way to the Drachentor, past the Cave Dragon (a friendly beast, guaranteed!) to the Höhlenkessel.
While climbing down the 180 steps from the entrance to the gurgling Höhlenbach stream, you can practise noting the names of the Wild Maidens: “Stuzze Muzz”, “Tchudre Mudre”, “Maringga” and “Ringedde Binge”. Stout shoes and a warm jacket are needed, as the temperature in the cave is just 4 degrees Celsius.

A path full of stories, sagas and myths
Where the road from Obermaiselstein to Tiefenbach narrows, the so-called “Hirschsprung” (bus stop and small car park), the Obermaiselstein Saga Path begins at the foot of the Schwarzenberg. The shady path through forest and over meadow takes the hiker on an exciting journey through time. Five themed sagas have been staged in the midst of nature by local artist Hildegard Simon. Interesting things are learnt at the individual stations, e.g. about the Venedigermännle (Venice man), the fire ritual of the “travelling folk”, the treasure in the Sturmannsloch and the four Wild Maidens.
