Visitors used to be taken to the Zammer Lochputz by coach, so that they could gaze in wonder at the mighty waterfall. In those days, only courageous climbers made it into the rear section of the ravine, and for their efforts were rewarded with the fascinating spectacle of nature at work. Today, visitors take a safe water-experience path to reach Tyrol’s mystic ravine and Lötzer waterfall – also known locally as the “Lochbach”. However, a little courage is still needed if they want to see the water rush past under their feet. The “Wild waters of the Tyrol” are far from tame, and the mesh of the experience climb affords dizzying views of the thrashing water and rock formations.
Statues of stone and rock
The Zammer Lochputz is legendary, and the tour sets off in an equally legendary fashion: It begins with the oldest hydro-power station in the Tyrol and water legends from around the world. It continues via a suspension bridge and paths in the rock face to a dilapidated forge. Bells ring out of a cave. Anyone traversing the cave has to look into his own heart before he comes across the large stone bull, the “Zammer Lochputz” at the waterfall in the Zammerloch. The ravine was given its name by the locals over centuries. The statues formed by the water bear witness to the many legends that surround it. Inside the Lötz tower opened in 2007 – a defensive tower from the Appenzeller wars – visitors will be impressed by a fascinating multimedia show at the end of the tour.
